These are the most disliked questions on the digital SAT and the most learnable. The reason they feel slow is almost never the reading — it's that nearly everyone does the steps in the wrong order. Read the goal before the notes and the whole question changes shape: the bullets stop being a passage you have to absorb and become a table you scan for one specific thing.
What you're looking at
A short list of bulleted notes — usually four to six — presented as a student's research. Then a goal statement, always some variation of "The student wants to…". Then four sentences, and the question of which one best accomplishes the goal.
They live in the Expression of Ideas domain, so they appear near the end of each Reading & Writing module. Expect a couple per module.
Why the notes-first habit costs you a minute
Reading the notes first means reading them without a purpose. You absorb five facts, none of which you know the relevance of, then read the goal, then have to go back through the notes with the goal in mind — a second pass you've now paid for twice.
Reading the goal first means you arrive at the notes with a target. You're not comprehending; you're locating. That's a different cognitive task and it's much faster.
Order matters more here than on any other question type on the test:
- Goal statement. The sentence starting "The student wants to…" Read it twice.
- Say the job in your own words. "Contrast two things." "State what they found." Five words, silently.
- Scan the notes for what that job needs. Contrast needs two subjects. A finding needs a result.
- Now read the answers, keeping only those that do the job.
Wrong answers here are usually factually correct. They're accurate statements pulled faithfully from the notes that simply do a different job than the goal asked for. This means checking an answer against the notes cannot eliminate it — the check most students run is the one check that doesn't work. Accuracy isn't being tested. Purpose is.
The three goal types
Nearly every goal is a variation of one of these, and each has a structural requirement you can check before reading carefully.

The structural checks are worth internalising because they eliminate without careful reading. A contrast goal with an answer mentioning one subject is gone in two seconds, regardless of how well written it is.
Worked example 1 — contrast
Notes:
- Bioluminescence is light produced by living organisms.
- Fireflies produce light through a chemical reaction involving luciferin.
- Anglerfish do not produce light themselves.
- Anglerfish host bioluminescent bacteria in a specialized organ.
Goal: The student wants to emphasize a difference between fireflies and anglerfish.
Job, in five words: contrast how each makes light.
Structural requirement: both animals, plus a contrasting connective.
Now the choices:

Every wrong answer here is true. That's the design, and it's why "does the notes support this?" never eliminates anything.
Worked example 2 — the audience clause
Notes:
- Marie Tharp was a geologist and cartographer.
- In the 1950s she mapped the floor of the Atlantic Ocean.
- Her maps revealed a rift valley running along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
- The rift valley supported the theory of continental drift.
- Her findings were initially dismissed by colleagues.
Goal: The student wants to introduce Tharp's work to an audience already familiar with continental drift.
Almost everyone reads past the last five words. They are the entire question.
"Already familiar with continental drift" means: do not explain continental drift. Any choice that defines it is disqualified — not for being inaccurate, but for telling this audience something it already knows.

Audience clauses come in both directions. "Unfamiliar with X" means you must define X, and the answer that assumes knowledge is wrong. Read that clause deliberately every time — it flips the correct answer completely.
Worked example 3 — finding vs. everything else
Notes:
- Researchers studied great tits, a common songbird, in city and forest habitats.
- They recorded and analysed the birds' songs in both settings.
- City birds sang at a consistently higher pitch than forest birds.
- Higher-pitched song may carry better over low-frequency traffic noise.
Goal: The student wants to present the study's primary finding.
A finding is what they observed. Not what they did, and not what it might mean. The notes deliberately supply all three.

The interpretation choice is the trap that catches strong students, because it's the most intellectually interesting sentence on the screen. Hedging language — may, might, could, suggests — is a reliable tell that you're looking at an explanation rather than a finding.

How to practise this properly
Twenty questions untimed beats sixty timed, at first. You're building recognition, and speed follows recognition rather than producing it.
For each one, write down the job in five words before you look at the answers. That's the drill. It feels slow and artificial for about a week, then it stops being a step you perform and becomes what you notice first.
When you review, don't just check right or wrong. For every wrong answer, name which of the four failure modes it was — and for the wrong answers you didn't pick, name why they were built.
