SAT Command of Evidence: Text & Quantitative

Command of Evidence questions ask which piece of information best supports a stated claim. They come in two forms, textual (four quotations) and quantitative (a graph or table), and total roughly 6–8 questions per test. The quantitative ones are the questions students most dread on Reading and Writing, and they are also the most mechanical questions in the section. There's a procedure, and it works every time.

The graph is never hard. The arithmetic almost never exceeds comparing two numbers or noticing which way a line slopes. What makes these questions difficult is that they have two conditions to satisfy, and students reliably check only one.

Part 1: Quantitative Command of Evidence

You get a short passage, a graph or table, and a prompt along the lines of: "Which choice most effectively uses data from the graph to support the researchers' claim?"

The method

  1. Read the graph first, before the passage, before the choices. Fifteen seconds. Note five things: the title, the x-axis label, the y-axis label, the units, and the legend.
  2. Find the claim. It's stated in the prompt or in the sentence just before the blank. Underline what it actually asserts: including any qualifier like only, after 1990, among juveniles.
  3. Test each choice twice.
    • Is it accurate? Does the graph actually say this?
    • Is it relevant? Does it support this specific claim?
  4. Pick the only choice that passes both.
The two failure modes

Every quantitative evidence question is built around exactly two kinds of wrong answer, and knowing them is most of the battle.

Accurate but irrelevant. The choice reads the graph perfectly, and supports a claim nobody made. This is the most common wrong answer on the type, because once you've decoded the data correctly it feels like you've answered the question.

Relevant but inaccurate. The choice addresses the claim head-on but misstates the data: swaps two categories, reverses a trend, or quotes a number from the wrong axis. This one catches students who read the claim carefully and then skimmed the graph. A free full-length practice test reports how many points this domain is costing you.

Why step 1 matters more than it looks

Reading the graph before the choices sounds like a small ordering preference. It isn't. If you read the answer choices first, each one hands you an interpretation of the graph, and you end up checking whether that interpretation is plausible rather than reading the data independently. Fifteen seconds spent orienting yourself first means you arrive at each choice already knowing what the graph says.

Specific things to catch in those fifteen seconds:

A worked example

Suppose a passage describes a study of urban bird populations, with a bar graph showing nesting density in parks of four sizes, split by two species. The claim: "The researchers concluded that the smaller species is less dependent on large green spaces than the larger species."

What the claim needs is a comparison between the two species across park sizes, specifically, evidence that the smaller species holds up in small parks where the larger one doesn't.

Notice that three of the four are perfectly true statements about the graph. Truth isn't the criterion. Fit to the claim is.

Part 2: Textual Command of Evidence

Same logic, no graph. You get a claim, often about a researcher's hypothesis or a literary work, and four quotations. Which one best supports, illustrates, or (occasionally) weakens it?

The method

  1. Restate the claim in your own words before reading any quotation. If you can't, re-read the passage. You can't evaluate evidence for a claim you haven't pinned down.
  2. Note what kind of evidence the claim needs. A claim about a character's hidden reluctance needs a quotation showing hesitation, not one describing the setting. A claim about a hypothesis needs a result, not a description of the method.
  3. Test each quotation against that requirement.

The wrong-answer patterns

One question that resolves most of these

Ask: "If this quotation were removed, would the claim be any weaker?" If not, it isn't evidence. It's context. This single test eliminates the "on topic, off claim" and "too general" wrong answers, which together account for most misses on the textual form.

Why math-strong students do well here

There's a pattern worth naming. Students who are strong on SAT Math often outperform on quantitative evidence questions, and not because of the arithmetic. It's because Math has already trained them to check units before drawing a conclusion, to notice whether a quantity is absolute or relative, and to distinguish "this statement is true" from "this statement answers the question."

If that's you, know that this skill transfers directly. You likely need less practice here than you think, and should spend that time on Inferences or Cross-Text Connections instead.

And if graphs make you uneasy because you think of yourself as "not a math person," the reassurance is genuine: there is no algebra in these questions. Reading a legend carefully is the entire quantitative demand.

Coaching tip

When a student misses a quantitative evidence question, I ask them to tell me which of the two conditions failed, was the choice inaccurate, or was it irrelevant? Most can't say, because they never separated the checks. Once they start labeling every miss as "accuracy" or "relevance," the fix becomes obvious: accuracy misses mean slow down on the graph, relevance misses mean re-read the claim before choosing. Two different problems, two different fixes, and most students only have one of them.

How to practice this

  1. Untimed, graph-first. Cover the choices. Write one sentence describing what the graph shows before reading anything else. Then reveal the question.
  2. Label your misses as accuracy failures or relevance failures. Keep a running tally over two weeks.
  3. Add the clock last. Target 100 seconds for quantitative, 80 for textual, and keep the fifteen-second graph orientation even when timed. It pays for itself.

Because these are among the slowest questions in the section, the time has to come from somewhere. It comes from grammar questions answered in 35 seconds. That trade is the core of pacing the section properly.
