The average is about 71 seconds per question, but you should not spend it evenly. Standard English Conventions questions should take 30 to 40 seconds, Words in Context and Transitions about 45 to 60, and Cross-Text Connections or Quantitative Command of Evidence can justifiably take 90 to 120 seconds. Banking time on the fast types is what funds the slow ones.
The average is a budget, not a target. Spending 71 seconds on a Conventions question is a straightforward loss, because that time has to come from a Cross-Text Connections question later. Practise the fast types until they are genuinely fast, and the slow ones stop feeling rushed.
