How many questions are in the SAT Reading and Writing section?

By Updated 1 September 2026

54 questions across two modules of 27, with 32 minutes for each module: 64 minutes total. That is 54 of the 98 questions on the whole digital SAT, making Reading and Writing about 55% of the exam. Four of the 54 are unscored pretest questions, but they are not identified, so treat every question as if it counts.

The unscored pretest questions are worth understanding but not worth hunting. Four of the 54 do not count, they are not marked, and any time spent guessing which is time taken from the 50 that do. Treat all 54 identically.
