Most study advice tells you to "do more practice questions." That's not wrong, but it's the last step, not the first. Students who jump 100+ points don't just grind — they grind the right things in the right order. This playbook has four moves. Run them in sequence.
1. Diagnose before you drill
You can't fix what you can't see. Before you touch a single practice set, take one full, timed, digital Math section under real conditions — same timer, same on-screen calculator, no phone. The goal isn't the score; it's the error map.
Go back through every question you missed or guessed on, and label each one with a single cause:
- Content — you didn't know the concept or formula (e.g. how to complete the square, or the exponential-growth setup).
- Careless — you knew it but slipped: misread the question, dropped a negative, solved for the wrong variable.
- Timing — you ran out of time or rushed the last handful.
After 40–50 questions, a pattern always emerges. Most students who are already above 600 discover that careless and timing errors — not content gaps — are quietly costing them the most points. That completely changes what you should practice.
A score isn't one number — it's a sum of leaks. Fix the biggest leak first. For a 640-scorer that's usually careless errors; for a 500-scorer it's usually two or three content domains. Diagnosing tells you which student you are.
2. Close content gaps by domain, not at random
Digital SAT Math covers four content domains, and they are not evenly weighted:

3. Kill careless errors with a repeatable process
Careless errors feel random, but they aren't — they cluster around predictable moments: the last line of algebra, the "which of the following" swap, unit conversions, and questions you're sure are easy. You beat them with process, not willpower.
- Underline what's actually asked. "Value of x" vs. "value of 2x" vs. "which statement must be true" — the trap is almost always answering a slightly different question.
- Use the built-in Desmos calculator deliberately. On the digital SAT you have a graphing calculator on every question. Graphing a system, finding an intersection, or checking a factor takes seconds and removes whole categories of arithmetic slips. Knowing when to reach for it is a skill — practice it.
- Do a 3-second sanity check. Is the sign right? Is the magnitude plausible? Did I answer for the right variable? This single habit is worth 20–40 points for most students.

4. Practice under real conditions, then review harder than you practice
The final move is deliberate, test-realistic reps — but the review matters more than the reps. A practice question you got right by luck, or right the slow way, still hides a lesson. For every set you finish:
- Redo every miss without looking at the answer, from scratch, until you can produce the full solution cleanly.
- For anything you got right but slowly, find the faster path — there's almost always a 20-second route the College Board intends.
- Re-test the same concept 2–3 days later. Spacing is what turns a one-time fix into a permanent one.
