SAT Grid-In Questions: The Format Rules

About 25% of digital SAT Math questions are grid-ins, roughly 11 of 44, where you type the answer rather than choose it. There's no partial credit and no answer choices to check yourself against, so a correctly-solved problem entered in the wrong format scores exactly zero. These are the rules.

Grid-ins are the most under-prepared question type on the SAT, and it's a formatting problem rather than a mathematical one. Students drill the algebra and never once check how the answer box behaves. The accepted entry formats are specified in College Board's Math section overview.

That matters because the failure is silent. There's no warning, no "invalid entry" prompt for a badly-formed answer that's still technically enterable. You simply lose the point.

The mixed-number trap

If you take one thing from this page: never enter a mixed number. It is the most common grid-in error and the most expensive, because the answer you typed is a real number the machine can read. It's just a completely different one. 2 3/4 becomes 23/4. Convert to an improper fraction or a decimal, always. Each one is a raw point like any other; the score calculator shows what that converts to.

Repeating and long decimals

This is where the character limit bites. If your answer is 2/3, you have three valid options:

What you must not do is enter fewer digits than the box allows. .66 or 0.67 are not accepted as answers for two-thirds. The rule is that a decimal answer must fill the entire available space, either truncated or rounded.

The safe habit: when an answer isn't a clean decimal, enter it as a fraction. Fractions are never rejected for precision and they sidestep the whole rounding question.

When more than one answer is correct

Some grid-ins have multiple valid answers. Commonly "what is one possible value of x" for an inequality, or a quadratic with two roots where the question doesn't specify which.

Enter only one. The box accepts a single answer, and any correct one scores the point. Don't attempt to enter both separated by a comma or slash; that produces an invalid entry.

Where the question does specify ("the least possible value," "the positive solution") that qualifier is the question. Read it twice.

Negative answers and the character count

The limit is 5 characters for a positive answer and 6 when a minus sign is included. The minus doesn't eat into your digits. So −1.234 fits.

In practice the limit rarely binds, because SAT answers are designed to be enterable. If you're producing an answer that doesn't fit, that's usually a signal you've made an error somewhere. Treat it as a prompt to re-check rather than a formatting problem to solve.

A useful self-check

Grid-ins remove the safety net that multiple choice provides. On a multiple-choice question, an answer that isn't among the options tells you immediately that something went wrong. On a grid-in, nothing tells you. So build the check in yourself: does this answer make sense in context? A negative length, a probability above 1, a percentage of 340. Each is a signal to look again before moving on.

Strategy notes

  1. Never leave one blank. There's no penalty for a wrong answer, so an educated guess is free expected value. Even a rough estimate occasionally lands.
  2. Enter as you go. Don't solve a grid-in and save the typing for later. You'll misremember a digit. Type it immediately, then flag if you want to revisit.
  3. Check the units the question asked for. Grid-ins ask for values "in dollars," "in centimeters," "in percent" more often than multiple-choice does, because there are no options to disambiguate.
  4. Prefer fractions when in doubt. They avoid rounding rules entirely.

Where they sit in the module

Grid-ins cluster at the end of each Math module, which means they arrive when your remaining time is tightest. Because they take slightly longer to enter than a multiple-choice selection, budget for that. The pacing logic is the same one that governs the Reading and Writing section: bank time earlier so the slower questions at the end aren't rushed.

And because a hard Module 2 concentrates its difficulty in Advanced Math, the grid-ins you meet on the harder path are usually the hardest questions on the test. Reaching them with four minutes rather than ninety seconds is worth a lot.
