What are the exact PSAT score release dates?
College Board's score release page, read on 28 September 2026, sets the fall in-school testing window at 1 to 30 October 2026. Schools may also run the PSAT/NMSQT on Saturday 17 October. Every release date keys off one thing: the date the school submits answers.

Look at the middle column. Your school sees your score two days before you do, and the gap is exactly two days in all three waves. If you are impatient, that is your move: your counselor already has the number.
Why did my friend get their score before me?
Because their school posted the answer sheets earlier. That is the whole explanation, and it is worth saying plainly because students read the gap as a sign that something went wrong with their own test.
The spread is real and it is wide. A student in a school that submits by 9 October reads their score on 22 October. A student who sat the same test on the same morning, in a school that submits on 30 October, waits until 12 November. That is a 21-day difference produced entirely by paperwork. Neither student did anything differently.
There is a second reason the gap surprises people. College Board's student-facing page on getting in-school testing scores tells students only that "We'll text you when your scores are ready to be accessed through the app." It never says what sets that date. The answer lives on a different page, written for test coordinators. So the rule exists, it is published, and almost no student is shown it.

How do you get the score?
Two routes, and the first one surprises students who expect a College Board login.
The main route is the BigFuture School mobile app. If you gave a mobile number on test day, College Board texts you when the score is ready, with instructions to download the app and sign in. If you did not give a number, you can still sign in using your test registration number, which sits on your score report or your sign-in ticket. Your counselor can look it up.
The second route is your school. It receives a PDF report covering all of its students, so a counselor can hand you a copy. Students aged 13 and over can also use a personal College Board account to see more detail online.

Does the release date affect National Merit?
No. Your score date has no bearing on whether you qualify, and juniors sitting the October 2026 PSAT will not learn anything about National Merit for almost a year.
Juniors testing this October are the Class of 2028. Their Semifinalist cutoffs will not be published until September 2027, at the start of senior year. The most recent figures are the Class of 2027 cutoffs, announced on 9 September 2026. The national Commended cutoff was 208. One thing to settle before you read too much into any of it: only the eleventh-grade PSAT/NMSQT enters the scholarship competition at all. The PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10 do not, whatever the score.
What should you do while you wait?
Three weeks is long enough to waste and short enough to use.
The useful thing is that you already know how the test went, roughly, and you do not need the report to start. The PSAT and the SAT run on the same scale and the same adaptive format, so a PSAT weakness is an SAT weakness. A junior who found the Reading & Writing modules slow has a pacing problem that will still be there in March, and it is easier to fix in October than in February.
When the report does arrive, the number worth studying is not the total. It is the split between the two sections, because National Merit weights Reading & Writing twice and the SAT does not. A 1300 built on strong Math reads very differently from a 1300 built on strong Reading & Writing.
