Scores from the 22 August SAT release on Friday 4 September. Late registration for the 12 September SAT closed on 1 September. Read those two dates together and you get the problem nobody warns you about: you cannot use your August score to decide whether to sit in September, because the decision expired three days before the information arrived. Your next usable date is 3 October, and its deadline is 18 September.
This is not a scheduling accident
It happens on every administration, in both directions, all year. College Board's score release dates and its dates and deadlines page are published separately, and nothing on either one points at the other.
The clearest version of the pattern is the free score reports. Every registration includes four sends to colleges at no cost, but you have to use them within nine days of the test. Put that against the release date for each autumn 2026 administration:

A four-day gap, on every single date this autumn. To use the free sends you must commit before you know the number. College Board publishes no warning about this on its score-sending page, and we could not find one anywhere on its site.
What Friday actually looks like
Scores appear through the morning United States Eastern time, not at one announced hour, and they land in waves rather than all at once. A friend having theirs before you means nothing at all.
What arrives is a total out of 1600, two section scores out of 800, and percentile ranks. What does not arrive is the questions you missed. The Question and Answer Service remains discontinued, and test-prep professionals asked for it back at College Board's 2026 briefing without getting a commitment, so reviewing a real administration is a different job from reviewing a practice test.

The October path, and its real deadline
If Friday's number sends you back for another sitting, October is the date. Here is the calendar you are working against:

That gives you fourteen days between seeing your August score and the October registration deadline, then nineteen days of preparation. It is a workable window, and it is the last one that returns a score before most Early Decision and Early Action deadlines on 1 November.
Should you register before Friday?
You have until 18 September, so there is no need to decide tonight. But there is one argument for registering early that is not about panic: seats. Centres now hold back roughly 40% of capacity for their own students and release it dynamically, so a full search result is often not a final answer, and the waitlist costs nothing.
The counter-argument is money. Registration is $68, changing your test centre later is $34, and cancelling is $34, rising to $44 after the deadline. If you are genuinely unsure whether you will retake, waiting until you have seen your score costs you nothing and saves you a potential $34.
The decision Friday's number should actually drive
Not "retake or not." That question is usually answered by your target list rather than your score. The more useful question is which half of the test is losing you points, because at every band below about 1450 the answer is normally one section rather than both, and the fix is different for each.

Is it worth sending scores blind to use the free reports?
It depends on how confident you are and how many colleges you are applying to. Four reports at $15 each is $60 of value. If you are applying broadly and expect a score in your usual range, sending blind is reasonable, especially since most colleges superscore. If you are unsure, paying later for the sends you actually want is the safer choice.
Will an October SAT score arrive before Early Decision deadlines?
Yes. The 3 October administration releases scores on 16 October, which is ahead of the 1 November deadline most Early Decision and Early Action programmes use. The 7 November administration releases on 20 November and will miss a 1 November deadline.
What does the score report show me about the questions I missed?
Nothing question by question. The Question and Answer Service, which used to return your answers with the questions, remains discontinued. You get section scores, a total, and percentile ranks, which is why reviewing a real administration relies on reconstructing your own impressions rather than on an official answer key.
