SAT Score Day for Parents: What to Say First

By The first five minutes and the week after 6 min read

When the SAT score comes in, start with a question, whatever the number is: ask your child what they think of it. Hold your own verdict until you have read the report together. A score only means something next to two things you won't have looked at yet: the range printed under it, and the scores at the colleges your child is applying to.

Students talk about their parents' reactions a lot. On the student forums for the SAT and ACT, one of the most upvoted posts of the year came from a student whose parents were angry about a single missed question on the ACT, and several threads this year about a parent's reaction to a score passed a hundred replies.

The first five minutes

SaySkip
"How do you feel about it?""What happened?"
"You put real work into this."Any comparison with a sibling, a cousin or a friend's score
"Want to look at the report together tonight or tomorrow?""So you'll retake it?"
Nothing, if they need a minuteAny number that isn't on their report

If the score is great, say so and mean it. If it is lower than they hoped, they already know. Your job in those five minutes is to keep the decision about what happens next separate from the disappointment.

Read the report together, later

Give it a few hours, or until the next day. Then sit down with the PDF, which College Board calls Your Scores, and go through it in this order. How to read your official SAT score report covers every part in detail.

  1. The total and both section scores. Which section is lower? That is usually where the next points are.
  2. The range under each score. College Board puts it at plus or minus 40 points for the total and 30 for each section. A 1520 and a 1560 can be the same performance on different days.
  3. The percentile. The share of SAT takers in the last three years who scored the same or lower.
  4. The Knowledge and Skills bars. Eight bars, one per content area. The lowest bar in an area with many questions is the most useful thing on the page.

Compare it with the right number

The number that matters is the middle 50% of admitted students at the colleges on your child's list. A friend's score doesn't matter, and nor does the target someone set at the start of the year. Look up each college's range and see where the score sits: below, inside or above. What is a good SAT score shows how, and how colleges use SAT scores explains which colleges require a score, which recommend one, and which only consider it.

The same applies if your child is applying to US universities from India. The college's published range is the comparison. Board exam percentages and coaching-class rankings don't translate.

Some colleges are test-optional. If the score sits below a test-optional college's range, sending it may not help. Whether to submit works through it by score band.

Talk about a retake after that comparison

A retake is worth planning when at least one of these is true:

If the score is already inside the range at every college on the list, another sitting usually buys less than the hours it costs. Those hours often do more for an application when they go into essays and grades. How many times to take the SAT has the published data: the first retake tends to raise a superscore about twice as much as any later one.

Two things make a retake lower risk than it feels. With Score Choice your child picks which test dates a college sees, though some colleges ask for every score. And colleges that superscore take the best section from each date they receive. The fees and deadlines are in how to send SAT scores.

If a retake is the plan, the next two dates are 7 November and 5 December 2026. Registration closes on 23 October and 20 November. Which SAT date to take works back from application deadlines.

If the score went down

Look at the size of the drop before reacting to it. A drop inside the range, up to about 40 points on the total, can be ordinary variation. Then look at which section moved. A fall in one section with the other steady points at something specific, often timing or one content area. Why big score jumps need different plans explains how the fix depends on where the score sits.

How the test felt is a poor guide to the result, in either direction. The two weeks after the SAT explains why.

What helps in the weeks after

Logistics and calm are the parent's job: the registration deadline, a working laptop, a quiet Saturday morning for a practice test. Quizzing at dinner tends to work against all of that. Our parent's guide covers what to do in each school year, including when paying for help is worth it and when it isn't. If you are weighing a tutor, is SAT tutoring worth it sets out what each tier costs and what it buys.

Frequently asked questions

What should I say to my child after a disappointing SAT score?

Start by asking how they feel about it, and hold your own verdict. Leave the questions about what went wrong and whether to retake until you have read the score report together, a few hours later or the next day.

Is a 30-point drop on the SAT a big deal?

Usually not on its own. College Board's score range is plus or minus 40 points for the total and 30 for each section, which is how much a score can move between sittings under identical conditions. Check which section moved before deciding it means anything.

Should my child retake the SAT?

Retake when the score is below the middle 50% at colleges they care about, when one section came in well below their practice scores, or when something went wrong on the day. If the score is already inside the range at every college on the list, another sitting usually buys little.

Do colleges see every SAT score my child has?

Not usually. With Score Choice your child picks which test dates to send, though some colleges ask applicants to send all scores. What colleges see has the details.

When will my child get their SAT score?

Weekend SAT scores come out 13 days after the test. They appear through that day, with no set release time. Every 2026 release date is in when SAT scores come out.
